Child Life Personal Statement

Improved Essays
When I first learned about and became interested in becoming a child life specialist, I started volunteering at Kanagawa Children's Medical Center in Yokohama, Japan as a high school volunteer. I communicated with diverse populations, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and many other populations using two languages, Japanese and English. I started learning sign language to improve my communication skills. I provided activities and play with children, siblings, and families while they waited at the hospital, and that helped me understand cultural, religious, and individual diversity. For example, I implemented origami activity with the patient and the parents from Russia, and it promoted the cultural competency in the hospital setting. I also worked with the patient in a diverse diagnostic group such as the patient with visual impairment. …show more content…
This experience greatly deepened my understanding of cultural diversity and collaboration. I participated in international and multicultural events at the university, and I learned cultures and religions which are different from my own. I also completed more than 700 hours volunteering and learning at two children's hospitals as a child life volunteer and a practicum student. I interacted with patients and families who have different cultures, languages, and religions, such as Hispanic population, and Amish and Mennonite populations. During my child life practicum, I observed the bereavement care provided for an Amish family. I realized that the grief process and bereavement could be different depending on cultures and religions. I learned how I can respect and support the individual differences and diversity in the interventions I provide, and also, I realized the importance of increasing my knowledge of other cultures, religions, and

Introduction The helping professions are designed to exactly that; help people. There are several systems and ways that people can be helped, depending on the situation. In the case of Lia Lee, a curveball of culture was thrown in. Although all of the service delivery systems were used to help her, there were times when not enough was done to help close the cultural divide between Lia’s parents and her doctors.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

As a person who grew up in Mexico, and moved to the United States 6 years ago, I believe my cultural competence has allowed me to develop personal characteristics that will enable me to understand patients from any culture. I appreciate and respect the multiple dimensions of diversity, recognize and embrace perspectives that are different that mine, and have learned to implement these in my daily life. My experience volunteering at a free clinic has allowed me to interact with patients from different underserved communities, but also with other volunteers and medical students from cultures different than mine. From this experience, I have been able to demonstrate I have the attributes to be part of a diverse group. I have developed competencies…

Many organizations are moving cultural diversity toward cultural competence in Healthcare (Galambos, C. M. 2003). Under the direction of the National Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity, standards for practice from a cultural competence perspective were developed and adopted by the NASW Board of Directors in 2001 (NASW, 2001). “The standards mentioned above by the NASW Board of Directors in 2001 provide comprehensive definitions of culture, competence, and cultural competence and may be used as a foundation for professional practice” (NASW, 2001). I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. I’ve also helped at a farm share held for homeless families in CHD shelters, which provides them with free…

Through my involvement at the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic and at FSA Community Program I learned to work in a team and to always share the same goal as my teammates. This common goal is to give the best and most accurate service to the patient at the clinic, the same goal was shared during my time at FSA. These teamwork experiences have also taught me to provide, accept and use feedback from the members of my group, and to always adapt, improve and develop new skills. Through these three activities, I was able to reinforce my reliability and resilience. By volunteering at a hospital and clinic, I was able to meet different types of patients with very different backgrounds and cultures, which allowed me to reinforce my cultural competence,…

Many of the children came from large families who were only able to give them limited attention, despite the fact that they desperately needed large amounts of individualized attention. The care that staff gave these children helped level the playing field for some of them. Despite their differences, all patients, first are foremost, are united by the fact that they are people who just want to improve their heath. As someone who is passionate about connecting with and helping others, I am interested in more than just the medical problems that people might have; I am interested in the patients as people. These experiences made me realize how important understanding the whole patient is.…

Public health statistics are often less reported by socioeconomic factors such as income or education (Braveman, Cubbin, Egerter, Williams, & Pamuk, 2010). I questioned why is that? If they did, it would give us a better understanding of how living below poverty line or not living at a favorable economic threshold, impacts an individual’s health. In the same token, it will allow individuals in government and the health industry, to better institute policies that address the health disparity that exist among members in our society.…

Essay I am grateful for this opportunity to apply for the Viola B. Wilson Endowed Scholarship and the John S. Staley Memorial Fund scholarships. Growing up, it was my responsibility to pay for things that I wanted, and my parents provided me with work opportunities around the house to earn the money.…

Before this course had initiated I measured myself as a person who was conscious of diversity and embraced the term. To my dismay I soon apprehended that I was not as open-minded as I had presumed that I was. Although, I had attended a multi-cultural school during my adolescent years that exposed me to different ethnicities. I had not developed a culturally competent way of thinking until I entered into Wayne State University’s School of Social Work program this fall. During my tenure at this diverse school I cultivated personal relationships with a multitude of people from different races, who possessed diverse beliefs and religions.…

As an only child growing up in a middle class family, I learned the value of helping others through my parents. My hard working parents were brought up in Bangladesh, a third-world country in South Asia with devastating poverty. Moreover, my parents are very strict and disciplining individuals; they both loved to help others regardless of their physical endurance, mental health, or economic stability. As role models, they reared me in the belief that my goals in life should include lending a helping hand to others. Furthermore, my empathy for others has encouraged me to aid those in need.…
