Many children at a tender age are forced to work long hours in factories that contain many hazardous conditions that make their lives difficult. Although child labor benefits many businesses, the children suffer terribly from beatings, deleterious factory conditions, and many health issues.
Children not only work excessive work hours that tire them mentally and physically, they also receive brutal beatings for simple little errors. Elizabeth Bentley was interviewed discussing her experience working at a young age. She reported being “strapped” for being late for work, not keeping up with her duties, and for being fatigued (Doc 1). The children are left with bruises and blisters form the many beatings they receive. Another child that experienced these terrible beatings was Matthew Crabtree. He said that he to was beaten for being late to the factory and not an hour went by without hearing a child cry (Doc1). Bentley, a child worker stated that the card room where he worked in was so dusty that the dust would rest upon his lungs (Doc 1). There is a cotton factory that Dr. Clough and Mr. Barker visited, they reported that one couldn't remain in that factory for longer than ten minutes without coughing their lungs out (Doc 3). The air in the factory is not stable enough for these poor children's lungs. They shouldn’t have to bare such ghastly conditions. On top of all this, the machinery is too dangerous for child use. Nearly half of the child workers have either lost a finger or injured a certain body part (Doc 3). The children have to drag and carry heavy baskets that pull their bones out of their place (Doc 1). They shouldn’t have to work in these conditions on a day to day basis, they should be monitored and the machinery should be handled more
