During the early decades of the twentieth century, the number of child laborers in the United States boomed. As industrialization moved workers from farms and home workshops, into urban areas and factory work, children were often preferred. Factory owners viewed them as more manageable, cheaper, and less likely to strike. Therefore inciting the era of child labor in the United States. A man by the name of Lewis W. The late 1800’s and the early 1900’s was a time when poverty and growth was at a record high for the American people. America was growing and becoming a force to be reckoned with; but at the same time, some American’s were struggling to make ends meet. Throughout 1877, until the last third of the 19th century farmers and sharecroppers were not profiting from their crops. The deflation of crops made it almost impossible for farmers to own land. Those that didn’t own land became sharecroppers and they did not receive the number of crops they were promised.…
The Progressive Era gave new ideas about how the government should function and how the people would respond with it. The Progressive gave new thoughts of conservation as Theodore Roosevelt acknowledged the need to preserve natural resources for the future. He then created the US Forest Service, the National Park Service, and the Newlands Reclamation Act to protect these resources. This is also the time period where child labor laws were starting to appear and the government made an laws that children must go to school which helped enforce this policy. Children Labor. During the 1900s child labor had begun to rise, children had started to become more and more involved in factories, due to their smaller size allowing them to move through smaller spaces, and also they were able to pay them extremely less than adults, this forced children ages 15 and under to work for extremely low wages, and for sometimes shifts as long as 13hours per day, most child labors worked to help support their families, but by doing this they are forfeiting their education. Many children of today start their day off with going to school and learning, however children didn’t always start off their day like this. Many children during the 1900s usually started off their day by working in factories, mills, mines or farms until it was late at night even though they were tired to the bone. They usually faced a day like this because they needed to support their families income, but were usually underpaid. Business owners ignored laws that prohibited child labor by continuing to hire children to pay lower wage and work long hours. People took notice of this which caused the start of the National Child Labor Committee, who refused to compromise with the way businesses were treating children.…

Rhetorical Essay Florence Kelley, a social worker and reformer gave a speech at the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia that emphasizes the need to modify the existing working conditions of young children as a crucial change in society. Through her use of repetition and various anecdotes over the conditions these children work in and the different state policies put in place, Kelley develops a highly compelling argument that ignites an interest in her audience to be aware of the problem and to join the cause in order to reform child labor laws. Kelley first intrigues her audience to the cause by introducing the problem of child labor in the first few lines where she says “…
In the early 1800’s and early 1900’s child labor played a huge role in America, and has vastly impacted our society in many ways. While child labor movements got the ball rolling, the continuance of the battle to abolish child labor would continue through national organizations. Shortly after the issue of child labor became public national organizations started to form. The first of such national organizations formed was the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC), which was founded in 1904 by Edgar Gardner Murphy. When Murphy created the NCLC he was working closely with a Felix Adler, who was a member of the New York Child Labor Committee. The NCLC’s purpose, according to the organizations secretary Samuel Lindsay, was to, “…investigate the conditions under which children are engaged in gainful occupations in all parts of the country, and to help create a healthy public sentiment in favor of giving every child the best possible chance to make the most of its life.”…
