Child Labour By: Khushi Parikh Have you ever wondered where your favorite top or the fireworks you used on Canada Day were made? Did you ever think it is possible that a child hundreds of miles away from you in a developing country helped make it? Child labour is an issue far, far away from us, which is why we often overlook and disregard it. It is quite heartbreaking to think that in this current world of advanced technology and innovative inventions, child labor still exists in some corners of the globe. The World Counts states in April 24, 2014 that "More than 200 million children today are engaged in child labor, 120 employed in hazardous work". Child labour refers to …show more content…
Not only do they have absolutely no respect from the adults they work for, the children are often abused. Poor work conditions like unsanitary facilities, exposure to chemicals and lack of experience with machines and sharp tools don’t stop owners from hiring kids. The sweatshop remains open for them no matter if it snows or rains. Poor work conditions make it very dangerous for kids to work, so there is a high possibility of getting injured. In extreme cases, even death. Kids can be near certain chemicals that damage the brain and body. The International Labour Organization in 2016 said that worldwide, an estimated 22,000 children are killed at work. These are some of the many reasons child labor is hurtful to …show more content…
They are payed little to nothing for the dangerous work they do for hours. Imagine getting paid the amount you would pay for a candy bar. The factory owners realize that children are easier to hire and pay. This occurs because children can't really speak up about their salary, on the other hand, adults fight for their rights. The children are often overworked and don’t have time to enjoy their childhood, let alone doing other things. The Borgen Project website's article from 2014 states that " one out of five children are not paid for their work". Whether you realize it or not, school has automatically become a big part of your life. Imagine these children, who don't even know about learning.
