Observation #2 Teacher and Child Interaction This observation is focused on the teacher/child interaction of the preschool program at Pasadena City College Child Development Center. There were twenty-five children in the room, aged from two and half to four years old, and four teachers were there on the day I observed. There were four to five children assigned to each teacher. On this observation, the focus is mainly on Ms.Katie. When the observation started, the children were coming back to the inside of the classroom from the outside area. After they came in, they started washing hands at the several sinks. The noise level was high because all four teachers were helping at the different sinks. All the children are sitting down with one teacher per table. There are four or five children at each table. The menu is the applesauce and graham crackers. When Ms.Katie is serving the food, she makes sure that the child is paying attention, saying “Ready? How many crackers? One, two, three.” There are several conversations children and teachers during the snack time. Usually, a child starts conversation and Ms.Katie makes a comment. Amanda says, “I have apples.” Ms.Katie replies, “You have apple at your house?” Amanda says, “My grandma has tree.” Ms.Katie says,”Oh, your grandma has an apple tree.” The topic sometimes changes all of a sudden by another child’s comment. Bob jumps in the conversation, “These are my coffee.” Emily adds, “I like coffee, my mom drinks coffee.” Then children started talking about coffee. During the snack time can be the learning moment, too. Ms.Katie talks about the lunch for today. Ms.Katie says, “What was the vegetable we ate today for lunch? Bob answers, “Carrot.” Ms.Katie tries to get the right answer by asking more questions, “What color was it?” Amanda says, “Yellow.” Ms.Katie asks more, “Carrots are not yellow. Is it brocorri? Is it….” Then Emily shouts out, “Corn.” Ms.Katie makes sure the answer is correct, “Yes. It is corn.” Then the conversation moves on to another topic, such as applesauce and milk. In this class, the teachers use directive words and sentences more often at this observation period. Although there are many directive and orderly verbal requests are heard in the classroom, the teachers show respect and talk nicely to children. Ms.Katie uses simple, firm, and directive words to children, however she show that she cares about children and tries to make every moment into the learning opportunities. Because of the time and activity of the observation, the children seem restless, and the teachers are busy completing their duties and supervising children at the same time. This situation is understandable with twenty-five preschool children in a large classroom during the transition time. However, the children listen to their teachers and follow their directions well. Some of them need a several reminders, but they tries to do what the teacher asks. Through this observation, the positive relationship between teachers and children are
