The original article, which brought attention to Mary Ellen’s situation, was published over a century ago, but unfortunately children today still have similar stories to share. According to the Children’s Bureau’s annual report, roughly 43 out of every 1,000 children in the United States had reported maltreatment during the 2013 calendar year. That figure means that even though society has made extensive progress through the past century, child abuse is still a widespread problem in modern society. As Markel eloquently stated, “Gone are the days when beasts of burden enjoyed more legal protection than children” (Markel 136). Now, when children abuse is reported there is a vast legal and protective system that has been put in place to make sure children are protected from their abusers, and to ensure that those abusers are punished to the full extent of the law.…
Until she reached her middle age, she had never spoken out to anyone about the abuse. There were many times when she doubted whether she should tell anyone. The first instance was when her mother sent her to a social worker for her “behavior” and the second was when she thought about telling her grandpa. In spite of how much it bothered her, she realizes it was difficult to make them believe her words because they could see not him in…
It was found that a large percentage of these now adults who had been victimized as children experienced depression as adults. They also attributed the depression directly to the abuse they experienced as children. In Wiehe’s study of people involved in a violent sibling relationship, 26% of respondents required hospitalization for their depression, and 1/3 of the respondents had attempted suicide at least once. These data suggest that the negative effects of sibling abuse may develop shortly after the onset of abuse and may be long lasting (Mackey, Fromuth, & Kelly, 2009).…

In those days the public shame card was used on victims and their families in regards to sexual abuse cases therefore not very many actually went to court or were ever reported. A few years back my mother was being seen at a local emergency room and in the next room, which was divided by a curtain, was a young teenage girl having complications due to being pregnant. The father of this baby who was also in the room with her, happened to be the relative who abused me and other members of my family.…

Many professionals, especially those in the mental health field, are required by law to report any suspected child or elder abuse. Mandated reporting is a law and anyone in the position of mandated reporting must abide by this law. However, for many, reporting does not always come easy. Flaherty (2006) states that the terms used to promote mandated reporting of child abuse in state laws vary by state but initially mean “reasonable suspicion” and, although an ambiguous term, it is purposely kept this way to promote reporting. The ambiguity of mandated reporting terms seem to be the cause of underreporting of child abuse because physicians are not able to accurately interpret the meaning of terms such as “reasonable suspicion” (Flaherty, 2006).…
A family member by marriage that I know and dearly love is a rehabilitated life registered tier three sex offender, he committed crimes against many children under the age of 13. A Tier Three offender is the most dangerous sex offender. He hid his sin and I never found out until after caring and loving him for 12 years. He will be on the sex offenders site for life, and today he is on OTIS the Michigan sex offenders registry with different name in a different zip code area. At the time this man was released Michigan law allowed offenders to change their names, today they cannot, although that does not stop them from changing their name.…
