Child Development Observations

The Algoma Health Unit Christmas Party was a fun day to interact and observe children through their development. Throughout our course, we learned very well the five areas of development and how crucial they are within a child’s life. By knowing the five areas of development, it has helped me observe the children at the party and apply my knowledge and really see it in action. Crafts engage multiple brain areas simultaneously and improve bilateral coordination between both sides of the brain, leading to future cognitive development. Within our craft, there were many materials that required kids to use both their hands to do something (ex: putting glue on an eye). Within my observations, most kids had an easy time using both their hands and …show more content…
The parent-child interactions I had witnessed were both positive and negative. There were many good situations with parents where they would gently scaffold and would only help the child when needed instead of just doing it for them. They would get down to the kids eye level when helping. On the other hand, there were some parents that would simply just leave their child at our station and not even care if they needed help. There were also some parents that would just stand behind their child and would reach over them to get stuff for them and not even get down to help. Another poor example is a parent who did the craft all for themselves and left their kid in the stroller not really paying attention to them. The parent then went to the cookie station and decorated a bunch of cookies for herself, and again, not paying attention to her child. As a student, I responded to poor parent-child interactions kind of shockingly but I knew there wasn’t much I could do. I understand that in a community like Sault Ste Marie with high drug rates and pregnancy rates, that there will always be poor parenting. The attachments to the parents were both positive and negative as well. There were cases where the child never wanted to leave their mother and always looked up to them for when they needed help. However, I did notice other cases where some children seemed to be happier with talking to our group than to be surrounded by their mother or even sometimes where the child would run away from their caregiver. When our group gave positive feedback, the child felt happy and would definitely be more open to

Another way in which practitioners support children’s well-being is by making sure the children are always provided with both educational and enjoyable activities, as children learn through play and the children are much more likely to learn if the activities interest them. These activities could include touchy-feely books, gluing and sticking, toy phones and drawing. Drawing, for example, helps children master the grasps (including the palmer grasp, pincer grasp and tripod grasp) and is also an enjoyable activity for some children to take part in so they could be interested. It is important to find activities and themes each child is interested in to make sure they are included and that they join in, as well as learning and developing in the activity as they are more likely to pay attention if they are interested, which could lead to them paying attention, learning…

It is important to evaluate whether or not the EYPP is making a difference to the children who need it the most. In the early years observations take place to assess where a child currently is working within according to the EYFS. This is where a good relationship between the setting and family would make a difference. A knowledgeable key person will know their key child’s starting points and will be able to track their progress through their assessments. In May 2015 OFSTED began including children receiving EYPP in their inspections.…

By this time the parents have been there for beginning stages of the baby's life which offers stability and confidence in the small child helping them later on in life. In an article written by Richard A. Settersten Jr. titled Worry More About Under-Involved Parents, Settersten says “If you are over-involved, step back... If you’re under-involved, step up” What Settersten is telling parents is that they need to find that happy medium and stay there. In a New York Times article written by Perri Klass, Klass talks about how a parent has to find the perfect balance and how you need to create a bond with your child in order for them to respect and trust you “You want your child to listen, respect and trust…

Spending two and half hours in each classroom, I learned a great deal about early childhood education from ages birth through eight, and the effort and skills that it takes to create a stimulating learning environment. For my infant, toddler, and preschool observations, I spent my hours at the CCC Childcare Center located in our college while for my kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade observations, I spent my time at Casey Park Elementary School. During my observations at the CCC Childcare Center, I learned plenty about the methods and practices that go into early education before primary grades. The preschool classroom really stood out to me because the centers in the classroom were very open ended and filled with lots of manipulative for…

There are five major perspectives on child development: psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, context, and evolutionary. Psychoanalytic perspective is the theory of personality developed by Freud that focuses on repression and unconscious forces and includes the concepts of infantile sexuality, resistance, transference, and division of the psyche into the Id, ego, and superego. Freud was also the first one who believed that all human beings were born with the desire towards hunger, sex and aggression. The Id is present at birth at represents unconscious desires, the ego is conscious and balances the needs of the id with societal demands, and the superego is the moral guide. Freud broke this development up into five stages.…
