The Mini-University Child Development Center is a child development center that is located on Miami University’s campus. There is a variety of ages for the children that are enrolled. They have different rooms for different ages of the children that are enrolled there. I did my observations in the Purple Room, which is the room that correlates with three and four-year-olds. I had three observation visits to Purple Room, all of which were in the morning and the total amount of time spent observing was around four and a half hours. My first observation was Monday, September 21, from approximately 9:00 am to 10:30 am. My second observation was Monday, September 28, from approximately 9:00 am to 10:30 am. The teacher had good control over the classroom and was consistent in her discipline when children would misbehave. It was clear when I was observing that all of the children had a good grasp of the classroom rules. She would let the children choose where they wanted to go for “Choice Time”, but she would let them go one by one, and called on the children who were sitting quietly first. She also went around and monitored children at each section, and made sure they stayed out of the areas they were supposed to. For example, in the classroom there is a corner underneath a loft that has blankets and pillows. This is the “quiet area” and it is where children can go when they get upset. However, Luna decided that it would make a very good hiding spot for hide and seek. The teacher saw them and reprimanded them, telling then they aren’t allowed to be in the quiet area if they aren’t upset. The teacher would also read a small book to the class after choice time and before they went outside. The teacher would make sure to speak clearly, and show the picture all around the circle so all of the children could see. She would also ask questions that would help the children learn. For example, she was reading a rhyming book. She would read a rhyming pair and then ask the group if it rhymed or not, and ask them to come up with another word that rhymed. She asked if house and mouse rhymed, and Ginny raised her hand. Ginny answered that they didn’t, and the teacher explained how they did rhyme. This helped Ginny to learn that rhyming words sound the same, but they do not need to start with the same

While working at the Day Center, I observed an elderly woman sitting all alone with a mesh bag under her chair packed with food. This struck me as unusual because people her age are typically in a nursing home, and receiving Social Security benefits to help meet their needs. After a while my curiosity got the best of me and I turned to Forrest and asked “who is the older lady over there with the food bag?” He said that her name is Imogene, and she has been a long time visitor of the Day Center. He went on to explain that “She has been here for years, and she either has no family or they have disowned her.…

I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom at Sunset Elementary under my master teach, Alissa Nakaji. Upon my first day, I instantly fell in love with the dynamics of the classroom. The classroom had colorful posters explaining rules, consequences, inspirational quotes, and a list of roles for each student (changed weekly). This classroom feels more like a community of students striving together to have an optimal learning experience instead of just one teacher demanding and controlling the students. It is very autonomous and the teacher is involved only when needed.…

In order to understand how a board operates in a child care center I did an interview with Laura via the phone from Frieden’s Lutheran Church. Laura was really helpful with answering the questions for me about the board. The director and the Assistant director need to make sure that the child care is operating efficiently and legally so they comply with all the rules and regulations set forth by the state and local laws. While holding these positions it takes a lot of time and commitment to keep the day to day operations moving smoothly. At this child care they actually have two boards, there an Administrative Committee, which has ten members and the Church Council board that has twelve members.…
