The issue that divided child-centered and social reconstructionist progressives according to Gutek (2013) was “the economic crisis of the Great Depression of the 1930’s made the school’s role in the social reform a pressing and controversial issue” (p. 295). The progressives urged educators to endorse a program for social planning and social, political, and economic reforms.

The reconstructionist progressives argues that schools and teachers need to be bring about social reform to help decrease poverty and create a more equitable society (Gutek, 2013, p. 295). “The child-centered progressives believed that education should be based on children’s interests and needs.
