until I read Chapter 2 in our books. By you mentioning it again, made me do some research. First off, it’s a non-profit organization that focuses their attention on victims that have dealt with drunk driving situations. A woman named Candy Lightner was the founder of MADD which started in 1980. The reason why she chose to do this was because her daughter was killed by a drunk driver. The man that killed her daughter only got two years in prison which infuriated her. She felt there should have been a harsher sentence and that laws and penalties specifically focused on drunk driving should be stricter. Drunk driving started to become a big issue in the 1980s and only her organization was successful at addressing these concerns. MADD even got its own movie aired on NBC named The CANDY Lightner Story and as of today established hundreds of chapters in The United States. MADD centered primarily centered its attention on preventing drunk driving and advocated that drunk drivers need to be penalized harsher. Most importantly, they conducted many programs that helped victims with coping through counseling, support groups or even on their 24 hour help line. In fact, it states that MADD in the year 2012 was able to serve around 60 thousand victims which was considered double the amount if compared 8 years ago (El-Guerbaly, 2005). In the year 1997, MADD declined fatal deaths in relation to alcohol by 20 percent (Heard,

Mothers Against Drunk Driving or MADD was founded in 1980 by Candy Lighter, whose daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver. MADD is an organization to help reduce drunk driving traffic fatalities. There are numerous anti drunk driving commercials out there, but I believe this on is the best, which is named Best MADD Anti DUI commercial ever on YouTube. It is the best because the organization’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos create an effective call to action for viewers to make more responsible choices. The video contains ethos by stating a few words at the beginning of the video of how much MADD has made a change, but they are honest in saying they still have a long way to go.…

“Backyard Patio” - Here MADD focus on how impaired driving cannot only be dangerous to the impaired person, but can be fatal to others as well. An outdoor birthday party is depicted, and, as the candles on the cake are being blown out, a car drives thorough a wood fence and into the patio. Multiple members of the celebration are shown lying on the ground, while one is calling for help, explaining that at least one person is “not breathing.” MADD again utilizes the method of showing how impaired driving can completely alter an event, and ultimately, people's lives. At one moment, the people pictured are enjoying a birthday celebration, while at the next, at least one person is likely to have been fatally injured.…

“2 drunk 2 care,” the words plastered on Kayla Mendoza’s twitter account just moments before she entered her car. Those words marked the end of two young women’s lives and the end of Ms. Mendoza’s freedom. On November 17, 2013 Ms. Mendoza chose to drink two margaritas with co-workers and get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated. Her decision led to the death of two 21-year olds, Kaitlyn Ferrante and Marisa Catronio, who fell victim to a deadly car accident on the Sawgrass Expressway. Kayla Mendoza’s tweet “2 drunk 2 care” demonstrates the feeling of invincibility that causes people to get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated.…

According to Traci L. Toomey, Carolyn Rosenfeld, and Alexander C. Wagenaar in “The Minimum Legal Drinking Age: History, Effectiveness, and Ongoing Debate” from Alcohol Health and Research World, the Minimum Legal Drinking Age (MLDA) should stay up at 21 to help prevent alcohol-related problems among youth such as, injury and death, second-hand effects, and health issues. Science is and has contributed to the study of the effect of the MLDA laws. After states lowered the MLDA from 21 in the seventies, traffic crashes among teenagers increased greatly, so the government indirectly returned the MLDA to 21. Along with the MLDA, states created drinking policies to further reduce drinking rates concerning teenagers. In correlation with the MLDA being raised, there were notable declines in vehicle crashes and crash fatalities.…

In 1987, Ronald Reagan and his administration pressured states by threatening local funding cuts. His ultimate goal was for a nationwide minimum legal drinking age of 21 (Tooney, et al, 2009). Supporters of this, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), believed that this law would end drunk driving related deaths. As a counteraction to MADD, the Amethyst Initiative formed.…
