I know there are sleeper effects because I have experienced some. I largely endured the associated emotional turmoil and confusion on my own because I did not have anyone I felt comfortable talking to, although I briefly saw a therapist after leaving a suggestive note on a teacher’s desk.
For this reason, my motives for pursuing child advocacy are twofold. On the one hand, my pursuit is personal. I study child advocacy as a way of understanding my own experience. On the other hand, I want to use my experience to help others. While my experience may not be the same as other people’s experiences, it will be a valuable tool in relating to their experiences. If I cannot use my experience to benefit others in some way, then it will mean nothing and I want it to have meaning.
Aside from my own personal experiences, I have volunteered at Holy Angels, a residential care home for moderately to severely disabled children and adults. I assisted with hand over hand that included painting and crafting and playing instruments with the residences by guiding their hands with my hand. My background in child advocacy will assist me in understanding what the various children I encounter may be experiencing, how to identify warning signs, and how students encourage student when they disclose maltreatment or deal with the aftereffects of maltreatment. Even at a private school, I may be legally responsible for reporting suspicions of maltreatment to DSS or Law Enforcement. The ACE study helps me have a broader understanding of how people may respond to and be affected adverse childhood events and the implications they may have on their future wellbeing. It is important to consider why children may be behaving the way they do and to consider the steps I can take to support
