Landon Markwell Pauline Beatte Advanced English 11 16 April 2024 Research Analysis: Child Abuse Robin Roe, the author of A List of Cages, wrote a book that jumped into the troubled life of a group of teenagers struggling with social issues. Julian, one of the main characters, is troubled with child abuse throughout the book. The book describes his journey towards freeing himself. Roe uses the character Julian, to help readers understand the form and signs of abuse, explore its impact on Julian, and find pathways to healing and support. First off, child abuse is when children are mistreated, malnourished, neglected, and abused in a mental, physical, or mental way. Brooklyn College posted an article, ADULT SURVIVORS OF CHILD ABUSE, highlighting the pros of engaging in counseling: “A counselor can lead you through the fear, pain, and confusion of your abusive experience and guide you supportively along the path of recovery” (BrooklynEdu). Although talking about the past experience may be difficult for the abused, someone who is trained to speak to people with issues and can provide many perspectives can help the healing. There are also groups that put many abused people in a room in attempts to share their story with others who may have gone through the same problems. Brooklyn College elaborates on the purpose when they write, “Hearing others recount their experiences of abuse will not only validate your own feelings (which may be marked by confusion), but will give you a springboard for resolving some of the conflicts these feelings evoke” (BrooklynEdu).
