In 2006 49% of victims were Caucasian. Of these cases parents are by far the most common perpetrators with an 83% rate. Although there are different forms of abuse the second most common is physical abuse with a rate of 16%. 0-1 year olds are at the greatest risk at 24.4%, while 1-3 years old at a risk of 14.2% (US Dept 2006). There are multiple factors that can play a role in child abuse. Many risk factors include disabilities or mental retardation on children, social isolation of family, the parent’s lack an understanding for the child’s needs and development, poverty, family violence, and parental stress. Despite the negative risk factors that go along with child abuse families can use a number of protective factors to help eliminate the issue. These protective factors include supportive family members, nurturing parenting skills, a stable family situation, household rules and functionality, parental employment and higher education, access to health care, and supportive communities (US Dept 2003). Society is being hit from this in various ways one being financially. It is predicted to cost society at whole of about $100 billion annually in the United Sates. About 1/3 expense of abuse is paid out to hospitals for victim injuries, mental health services, child welfare, and law enforcement. This covers the direct effect of the abuse on its poor innocent victims. The indirect cost of abuse proceed to account for the special education services, delinquent systems, and long term mental health care (Wang2007). As stated before the child abuse can leave serious effects on children especially infants which can easily result in psychological, physical and or social ramifications later in life. Unfortunately society has to pick up that cost and take care of those ramifications. This should be a driving force for humanity to help get involved and put a stop to child abuse!
