Child abuse has a long history. Children have been abused since beginning of time. For Many centuries the laws have failed to protect abused children. Back in the 1800 under the English law children were consider property of their father as to women were property of their husbands. In Early 1870’s there was the case of Mary Ellen Wilson, who was abused daily at her foster home (Association). Since there wasn’t a law that protected children from abuse the case was given to the American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty (Association). These attorney’s thought that the abuse of an animal should not outweigh the abuse of a child. When Mary Ellen case went before a judge he sentences her foster mother to 1 year in jail (Association). The case generates enough attention that in 1874 citizens formed the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (Society). …show more content…

Mandatory reporting laws mandated that require certain professionals such as Doctors and Teachers to report suspected child abuse (Association). In 1974 federal law called the Child Abuse Prevention & Treatment Act(CAPTA) helped eliminate child abuse by providing funding to programs to help abused children. Also providing a safe place and medical for victims (Association).
