Summary
This song “Drunk Daddy” by Cherry Poppin Daddies mainly highlights the issue of child abuse in family households but other issues are brought up such as poverty and love affairs. This song is about a son and daughter and their mother who marries a man who is an alcoholic, written from the perspective of the son. The first line of this song explains this situation, “Mamma married a big asshole, whiskey bottles on the floor”. The children are poor and get physically abused by their new father, “stepchild tired of being poor”. Other lines in the chorus describe the abuse, “Drunk daddy done kicked my head Drunk daddy smashed my sister”. Nearby was the city of Binghamton which became the main influence of Steve Perry’s music because it was described as, “a poor, run down, loner-class town”. Other influences come from other bands such as, Meat Puppets and Suicidal Tendencies. A combination of all his influences may have lead to him writing the song Drunk Daddy. For example, the story of Drunk Daddy could’ve been prevalent in the city of Binghamton. Steve Perry had a girlfriend in the 1980’s but it didn’t last long according to the magazine, “The Hollywood Reporter”. This could’ve influenced his lyrics in Drunk Daddy, “Now I'm grown up same old story at 21 fell in love she left me just like the others jesus why'd you curse my love?”. Some of the other lyrics have meaning to it such as, “Turned my whole world blood red” and, “Turned my whole world red”. This meant that his father turn his whole world into anger and pain from physical abuse. This type of song is called ska and it’s a combination of several music types including American jazz and blues.
