In the early winter months of 2012, NSW Police and Community Services discovered what is thought to be the nation’s most appalling saga of child abuse and one of the worst accounts of incest ever to be made public in an Australian community. People are unable to accept that child abuse happens in their community more frequently than they think it does. This can be very damaging to the children affected by it. The problem, in actual fact, is communities, parents and people do not want to believe that children are being violated by a family member or people they know. When children try to speak up and say they are being abused in any form, most do not believe them. Child abuse and neglect still remains a problem because of this collective denial in adults to accept the fact they have failed to protect a child or children around them from harm.
