There are approximately 3.3 million reported cases of child abuse and neglect each year (Child Abuse and Neglect, 2013). These cases are in six categories including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, and medical neglect. Sometimes people do not know that abuse also includes abandonment, threats, congenital drug use, and almost any other thing that is harmful to a child or person. The perpetrators are usually the child’s own parents. We have the ability and power to create a positive change in our community and on a broader spectrum, the world. These ways are a lot of the reason we are who we are today. If a child is abused the development of their brains can be impacted in traumatic ways throughout their whole life time, which can prevent proper growth and development of a child’s mind. According to the Child Abuse and Neglect article (2013) it states that “Abuse can cause anxiety, depression, dissociation, difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping and flashbacks.” (P.1) These are all things that affect a child for a large amount of their life if they continuously remember and have flashbacks about the abuse. It can make children untrustworthy of males, females, or people in general depending on who the perpetrator was. In all of these cases these are things that can highly affect a child’s education. As we know, most children attend school from approximately age five until 18. These are the key years to growing and development of physical and mental characteristics of children. The key to helping and keeping our children prospering in school and life is to protect them from the cruel and unusual punishments that most children experience when getting abused. We need to be aware of the signs and symptoms and keep our precious children and their valuable minds
