Defining the Issue:
Child abuse and neglect has now become a focus of public attention. According to the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (1994), “child abuse and neglect or child maltreatment is defined as any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm” (n.p.). Neglect is when someone can’t meet their child’s basic needs. Some examples would be not giving them enough comfort and support, not letting them receive a well-earned education, or providing them with basic supervision. Children are being seen through video cameras or cell phones being beaten or struck by parents and/ or guardians. Child maltreatment is happening all over society. There is not one single factor in determining the cause of child maltreatment. Whether it is physical or sexual, there have been many factors that seem to influence this type of behavior. As a child’s family has low income, his or her parent’s will tend to treat their children differently. Parent’s risk factors occur when the parent’s behavior becomes bitter which can lead to depression, low self-esteem, poor impulse control, and even antisocial behavior. This behavior from the parents could have been a result of them seeing violence as a child and therefore teaching themselves violent behavior which they use on their children. Substance abuse is another big factor in regard to parent’s risk factors. Using substances can impair judgment and self-control which could keep parents from protecting their …show more content…
