The most common type of abduction in the United States is family abduction due to custody battles and disputes. About fifty percent of abductions are by parents. Most of these parents will kidnap their children over the fear of losing the child during the dispute, reconciliation, or to punish the other parent. Many of the reported incidents of this conflict with the Child Abduction Law, which states that if parents are not living together or separated and there is no custody order, then it is not considered a criminal offense. In most of these cases, the child is safely returned. Acquaintance kidnapping is the next most common form and makes up about twenty-seven percent of abductions. This is an abduction committed by someone the child is familiar with, such as a friend or a caregivers. These abductions are considered the most dangerous, with the highest percentage of physical and sexual abuse, and result in more injuries. Surprisingly, child abduction by a stranger is the least common form of abduction, making up about twenty-four percent of abductions. There are several reasons predators abduct children, for example, human trafficking, slavery, sexual assault, and the desire to become a parent.
