I agree with you, Chief Joseph did show great leadership and courage when it came to protecting his people. When he surrendered he was thinking of the little ones that were freezing to death. In the course book on page 547, it states the General Nelson Miles had promised the Nez Perce that they could return to their homeland once they surrendered. He betrayed them. Just like the United States government betrayed the Lakota Sioux with the guaranteed that they would control the Black Hills and then took it away from them once they heard there was gold.
