Example Of Chickering's Theory

Chickering 's Theory first developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s focusing on student development. Since its revision in the 1990’s with Reisser, the student development theory continues to be relevant with students today and further research on how it applies to gender, race, sexual orientation continues to keep it relevant to student development of different populations and students in general. In observing and applying Chickering’s Theory myself I interviewed three students. I asked three simple questions such as “How is your week going?” follow by supplemental questions based on their answers, “What is your most memorable experience at emu so far? She is very busy taking taking five classes and working part time but still has time to socialize with her roommate and meet up with friends she met at orientation over summer. She most demonstrates vector of learning to manage her emotions because while she is enjoying life on campus, she is struggling with homesickness. She regularly keeps in touch with family and tries to keep herself busy to combat this. She is developing the ability to recognize and accept her emotions, and most importantly she is still learning how to manage her emotions as well. She is already well connected to her campus through her sorority, part time job and actively participating in college sponsored events. While she is doing well adjusting to campus, she is currently developing competence vector with most of her classes. She expressed she finds her business class easy while others find it hard, yet she struggled to write a short paper for her anthropology class this week. She hasn’t gained the skills necessary to excel in this class, such as interviewing people and looking at cultures through an anthropological viewpoint. Through such papers she gaining intellectual competency and interpersonal competence through better communication skills. The developing competence vector is still relevant today and will continue to be so in the future. Students no matter what age will continue to develop their competence as they go through college, such as their intellectual competence will continue to grow as they explore new topics of topics or when they change majors. This isn’t a vector students or adults for that matter stop developing in since people throughout their lives continue to develop their intellectual, physical and interpersonal
