Chickering 's Theory first developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s focusing on student development. Since its revision in the 1990’s with Reisser, the student development theory continues to be relevant with students today and further research on how it applies to gender, race, sexual orientation continues to keep it relevant to student development of different populations and students in general. In observing and applying Chickering’s Theory myself I interviewed three students. I asked three simple questions such as “How is your week going?” follow by supplemental questions based on their answers, “What is your most memorable experience at emu so far? Why?” and then asked supplemental questions off of that, and then “What is your favorite thing …show more content…

shows a little emotion, but not enough to say that she uses pathos exceptionally (Pharinet). A majority of people understand how it’s an emotional subject because they have either went through it or are starting to plan to; meanwhile others have decided that college isn’t for them. College courses are not a breeze by any means, but a few people will take on the task to make it through and say I did this for an improved lifestyle. Not just anyone enjoys learning; I know I do not always, but it’s not always a matter of enjoying to learn, yet more so the willingness towards learning. If you are willing to learn, you can be taught, it’s not required to be enjoyable.…

College Drop Outs The experience of switching from high school to a college campus can be very overwhelming for many students in today’s society. A big question amongst many adults is why are some of these students deciding to drop out of college in their first few years? Moving to a four year college right away, instead of attending a community college, partying, feeling like no extra guidance is available, and employment issues all play a role in this.…

In response to teaching his first freshman class in years, Keith Parsons, am old fashioned, often condescending professor at University of Houston-Clear Lake, writes an article entitled “Message to My Freshman Students. " The purpose of this article is to lecture incoming freshmen on the differences between high school and college, specifically, in how they are taught and how they learn. Parsons believes that students do not understand the logistics of a college education. In his opinion, students have spent their formative years learning in an incorrect manner, too focused on testing than anything else. He views it as his job to educate freshmen, and to “welcome [them] to higher education.…

Assignment 1: Does peer mentoring improve college freshmen retention rate? Samantha Dean A common question posed by administrators at institutions of higher education is how to retain college freshmen. The reasons that first-year students do not return to college as a sophomore range from family issues to lack of friends and loneliness to struggling academically and lack of money. Universities cannot control all factors relating to a student’s decision to not come back as a sophomore; however, they can experiment with ways to assist students who feel lonely or struggle with academics.…

My approach for students to gain these opportunities is reflected in the model I have established following support tools for student services by challenging students growth and development by challenging their educational and leadership opportunities. Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…

Aging is a beautiful challenging unique process that we have the privilege of tackling in each of our lives. For some it may be an easy planned out progression without many bumps in the road, but for most it is an ever changing journey that makes us who we are today. Aging doesn’t always ask us what we want or what we planned on doing with our time, but instead gives us experiences, good and bad, that make up our lives. What better way to understand being an adult and the aging process than to ask people who are right in the middle of it! Because different people with different ages have different experiences, I interviewed a 20 year old, a 58 year old and a 67 year old and asked about their aging experiences.…

Writing has proven to be a very serious struggle in my academic journey as a whole. I struggle with naturally choosing to write how I speak, and in an academic setting this proves to be very harmful to my grade. This un-academic style of writing cause me to make a 2 on the AP English exam when, if I would have simply taken my time and chosen to write more scholarly, I could have scored a far better grade on the exam and certainly would have been able to exempt English 1101. It is something I know I struggle with, yet I continue to do it. Furthermore, I believe enrolling in Professor Misty Soles English 1101 class truly helped shape my writing to a more collegiate standard.…

Students face various social and emotional challenges as they develop and interact with the world around them. Their ability to control their emotions and reactions is dependent on their level of development, surrounding environment, and the skills they have been taught, modeled, and practiced that deal with social and emotional factors (Ed Psych, p 70). During my field experience in my 3rd grade classroom at S.H. Elementary, I have observed Mrs. Branson establish relationships and provide students with the necessary skills needed to develop their emotional competencies. Mrs. Branson teaches 3rd grade in a charter school located in the south suburbs of Minneapolis. Her class consist of 23 diverse student learners from various racial, ethical,…
