“Leadership is a complex phenomenon. One thing is clear: leaders are not born into leadership, and you cannot make a leader. Leaders rise to existence by circumstances. Those who show up to the occasion are leaders” (Sweet, 2004). Born during the Great Depression, Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A is both a Visionary and Ethical Leader. Truett Cathy demonstrated he was a visionary by utilizing the Creator role when he created his signature chicken sandwich and was the first to incorporate fast-food in shopping malls. He also used intellectual stimulation from Full Range Leadership to inspire his company and employees, specifically by creating environmentally friendly shirts and ways to involve the local community. Our text defines intellectual stimulation as “the ability of finding creative solutions to problems, encourage followers to be innovative” (Thomas Barnes Center for Enlisted Education, 2016). As a company they saw a need to help reduce their footprint on the environment so Chick-fil-A’s Hospitality and service design team worked with a company out of South Carolina to create the 100 percent recycled polo’s that employees wear. To date Chick-fil-A has reduced landfill amounts by 5.3 million bottles (Chick-Fil-A, 2018). Another way Cathy encouraged his chains to be innovative was find ways to involve the local communities. Honesty and integrity in all that we do to help accomplish a task, through the use of teamwork, accomplished by our greatest asset, our people!
