The purpose of this lab was to observe how exposure to ethanol impacts early chick development. We also aimed to determine whether a dose dependence exists between exposure and manifestation of FAS. Chick eggs were injected with ethanol at different concentrations: 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% and development was terminated after 14 days. We found ethanol concentration had a significant effect on chick head diameter (tab.1), and the linear relationship can be seen in figure 2; as ethanol concentration increased head diameter decreased.…

Ag Science Research Introduction Colorful chicks are quite a sight to behold in the springtime, but what are colorfully dyed chick’s actual purpose. For farmers and ranchers the main purpose of wanting to dye a chicken embryo is to “provide a practical method of identifying chicks from different groups of eggs” and to observe a group’s movement as they develop. However, the most popular reason for dyeing a chicken embryo in the United States is to provide whimsical bright colored chicks to give away as Easter gifts. Over the past week, we have discussed prenatal development. Although prenatal development is not an area that directly relates to the work of a child life specialist, I am personally interested in this topic for a myriad of reasons. It is incredibly interesting that the most important phases of prenatal development occur when some mothers are just discovering that they are pregnant. By the time a mother has realized she is pregnant the embryo’s brain, spinal cord, heart, and other organs have begun to form and the heart may have already started beating.
