Daniel Burnham and John Root were unofficially told that if the World's Fair was to take place in Chicago; they would be the architects to design the fair. They were elated to be able to contribute to something much bigger than themselves. Burnham and Root sent out for Fredrick Olmsted, who was a credited architect and is known for his contribution to the design of Central Park in New York City, to come to Chicago and help choose the place where the World's Fair would take place. Fredrick declined at first because his health was bad but soon decided to help them out, because he was too patriotic prideful of his work to say no. They eventually deiced to have the fair at Jackson Park. Roots got his rough designs approved, then set out to find the best architects in the United States. Residents of Chicago were a very upset that Burnham and Root went behind their backs and brought in architects from outside of Chicago. The architects are from New York and they are very concerned about the location of the Chicago World's Fair. Root is starting to design the layout of the fair but falls ill and dies. Everyone is very concerned because no one can pick up where he left off. Burnham is so distraught by this sudden change of events that he considers quitting the fair.
