Chicago Public Schools- Coping and Surviving Through Budget Cut
The Chicago Public School (CPS) is a body politic and corporate as well as school district of the State of Illinois. CPS are financed through a combination of local, state and federal sources. Over the decade, CPS have been suffering from the budget cuts when the State of Illinois continue to fall behind in making payments to the district. According to the survey conducted by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, total local funding nationally declined between 2008 and 2014, adding to the damage from state funding cuts. Despite the fact that the budget cut push a lot of teachers to leave their job, there are teachers and volunteer who are willing to work extra hours to help children with their after school activities. Principal Pavichevich explains that Amundsen High School is one of the school that prepared in advance for a long-threaten cuts so that “no teacher will be laid off” (Perez 3). Similar, at Helen C. Peirce Elementary, teachers are able to secure their job for the last three years. Lisa Lambro, a teacher for diverse learner, started working at Peirce in 2013, expressed her deep impression to the new principal, Ms Lori Zaimi for what she has done to the school. Ms Zaimi took place in 2015 when Peirce was in the great leadership crisis. Zaimi is very engaged in school activities and stands up for her teachers. In 2013, there was only three teachers for diverse leaners and special needs. At the moment, there are 8 specialized teachers. While many schools have to cut their special education and art program, Peirce continue to maintain their regular activities and able to organize two major concerts every year. Afterschool activities such as Bollywood dance, floor hockey and poetry club are well-organized in the school.
