Chicago Home of the Hot Dog
For my culture project I decided to look into the history of the place I call home, Chicago. The Chicago History Museum takes people through the journey and creation of the thriving city people know and love today. The museum starts with the early history of Chicago starting in 1780 when the first settler, Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable. As time progresses Chicago turned into a prosperous city in 1837 with a population of 4,000 citizens, then reached a population of 3 million residents in 1930, and finally as of 2014 the third most populated city in America coming in at 2.7 million residents is Chicago.
My reaction to The Chicago History Museum was amazement. I did not know all the history our great city has flourished through. The Chicago Fire, World War 1, Haymarket Affair, and etc. Another thing that surprised me was the amount of information that was supplied in the museum. The museum was a two level building and honestly I was expecting one room. The things that fascinated me the most were the pictures and the secrets behind some of the most prominent features of Chicago. Starting with the first settler of Chicago, Jean Baptiste Pointe de Sable, an African American looking for a safe place to live and work. Many immigrants saw Chicago as a place of opportunity and a place to start or start over because it was the center of trade. Some of the main ethnic groups found in Chicago are Irish, German, Italian, Black, Korean, and Chinese. In 1930’s Chicago was dominated with gangsters and political debates and then into the 1950’s to 1960’s the city population shrank because families started to move out to suburbs.
