She captured the lives of women who worked in the home, raised children, visited their friends and families and adventured in the great outdoor spaces of Utah. One example of her work in photographing women is her Sewing Machine (fig 2). Here, a woman sits, apparently in the studio, at a sewing machine. An apron covers her dress and she stares ahead at the camera. This photograph is posed, a stylistic choice she picked up from her actor uncle, Don Carlos Johnson, and represents a traditional chore for women.…

This picture is black and white of young boy called Flavio, feeding rice to his younger brother Zacarias. My first impression of Flavio’s archive was that it seemed to be a very sad story. This photo shows the horrors of poverty and Flavio’s strength to survive, and even the courage to accept death without even thinking about himself but of his brothers and sisters. I did some research and found out that Flavio is a 12-year-old boy who has the huge responsibility of being an adult. He is able to accept this responsibility while still remaining vibrant and hopeful even though Flavio is suffering from a physical illness, poverty, overwork and worry.…

The struggle of finding yourself is difficult enough, but finding yourself in a continuously pressuring society makes it harder. For Alison Bechdel and the time period in which she came out, she was able to do so in a more welcoming environment than her father, albeit with some struggles regardless such as being made fun of and the pressures from her father to be a “girl.” For Hong Kingston, she struggles to find her own voice and identity growing up in a strict Chinese-American family and what it means to be a strong woman. Bechdel’s Fun Home and Kingston’s Woman Warrior come to terms differently with how women (and men) are treated, but they both aim to break the heteronormative, patriarchal stereotypes by embracing their identity and their…

When placed in a monotonous, tedious situation, it is only mankind's instinct to defer from the experience and find comfort in another. One desires a gateway to fulfilling their inclination, whether it is in a way to reminisce or to fantasize. In the novel The Things They Carried, O’Brien implements women as a metaphor for an idealist fantasy. It states that during an uneventful environment, one will be inclined to fantasize their own personal desires, to escape from the sad reality.…

Parental expectations often differ greatly from the child’s expectations and perspective of life, and future plans. A vivid picture of this idea is presented by Richard Maury in the image “Lorenzo Plus”. The focal point of the image is the mirror, in which one can see the apparently disappointed and exasperated father who plays half the role in defining the visual representation of this father-son relationship. It can be assumed that the younger man in the image is the boy, perhaps named Lorenzo, and he is a struggling writer. There is crumpled paper all over the floor, and filling the waste basket.…
