I. Attention Getter: Many people would think that the chewing gum was invented during recent years. However, according to the BBC News (2007), an archaeology student from University of Derby found a 5,000 year-old piece of chewing gum.
II. Credibility Statement: As a gum chewer myself for 10 years and through my extensive research, I am able to provide the history of the chewing gum and the affection of the chewing gum in society.
III. Relevance Statement: It is hard to find how many people chew a gum per year, but we know that about 35 billion sticks were sold per year in the United States or 25 packets of gum for each person in the United States. BODY:
I. Being an inventor himself, Thomas Adams attempted to create a kind of rubber inducing products with chicle, which is a species of Mesoamerican trees, but mistakenly invented the chewing gum with chicle.
A. Adams was making a cheap replacement for rubber with chicle
1. Famous Mexican general of Mexico Lopez de Santa Anna expected Adams to help him to introduce the chicle in the market as a replacement for rubber (Advameg, 2015).
2. Adams did the best he could and found no way to make it into the substances (Advameg, 2015).
B. Adam failed to create the rubber and unexpectedly invented the substance called Chewing gum (Yukozimo, 2015).
1. Adams, with fury, “decided to chew on the substance” and noted that the sap of the tree tasted it tasted surprisingly good.
2. Later on, Adams added flavors into the substance and the substance was named as Chewing gum.

Directional transition: Now that I have introduced Thomas Adams background and how did he accidentally invented Chewing gum, in the following I will discuss the influences of the chewing gum in society today.
