In New England, due to poor soil, no cash crops could efficiently be grown. Therefore manufacturing was the prime income. For example the construction of ships was a lucrative business. Additionally lumber and fur was a main trade item in the New England colonies. However, Chesapeake Colonies were founded for economic reasons. For example, Virginia gained settlers due to promises of gold. This idea of profit gained many colonists and wa the reason for many to leave Europe. Furthermore after Rolfe’s introduction of a new type of tobacco, tobacco became a dominate cash crop. Overall, the Chesapeake colonies were much more agriculturally based due to rich soil. This allowed the ability to grow cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo. Nonetheless both the Chesapeake and New England colonies were involved in trade. Overall, trade tied the colonies to England especially after the introduction of the Navigation Acts in 1651 which pertained to the Triangular Trade. In the Triangular Trade system, colonies provided raw material such as tobacco from the Chesapeake Colonies and lumber and fur from the New England colonies. These goods were then shipped over the Atlantic to England and in exchange the colonies received manufactured goods from England and slaves from Africa.
