Hey Mom,
I know you’re dying to know how my semester is going so I thought I’d share with you some of the assignments I’ve been working on. I just finished my first chemistry lab project involving drugs! Yes, drugs, but not the ones you’re thinking about. We worked with Sulfanilamide, Phenacetin, Acetaminophen, and your favorite, Caffeine. The goal for the experiment was to determine where the drugs may reside according to their properties. We learned that there are parts in the cell that are more hydrophobic (water-fearing) and other parts that are hydrophilic (water-loving). The cell membrane is mostly hydrophobic and the cytosol is mostly hydrophilic. We made predictions of where the drugs would reach giving their chemical structure. This

For our drug (Sulfanilamide), we got a negative log P value of 1.1181. Our drug showed that as concentration decreased, the absorbance also decreased. Our drug appeared to be more hydrophilic. Phenacetin had the log P value of 0.414 with a standard deviation of 0.801 for one of the groups. Another group had log P value of 0.972719 with a standard deviation of 0.128104. This data shows that the drug is partially more hydrophobic. Acetaminophen had the log P value of 0.0023 with a standard deviation of 0.0715 for one of the groups. Another group had log P value of 0.083 with a standard deviation of 0.023. The data shows that the drug is in between hydrophobic and hydrophilic. Caffeine had the 4 log P value that showed that the drug is mainly hydrophilic. I would expect to find caffeine and sulfanilamide to be in the cell-membrane. Acetaminophen would be split even in both the cell membrane and the cytosol. Phenacetin would mainly be in the cytosol. Our predictions were not very off. In fact, we were pretty on point thanks to the pre-lab work. We learned how to determine the polarity of the compounds from their chemical structure. We knew the order of the most hydrophilic compound and the most hydrophobic compound.
