Melanotan I is a synthetic polypeptide which is an analogue of the natural peptide hormone, Apha-MSH (Alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone) which naturally occurs within the human body and plays the role of triggering melanogenesis. Melanogenesis is the process by which peptides lead to pigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes, and leads to the tanning process hence it is very essential in the protection of the skin against the harmful UV (ultra violet) radiation which cause skin cancer. Alpha-MSH triggers specific melanocortin receptors (melanocytes) during its mechanism of action leading to production of melanin and also causes effects on lipid metabolism, sexual libido, and appetite through the same melanocortin receptors. Melanin is the skin pigment which offers protection against the destruction of the cells by DNA. Note that skin cancer is initiated by DNA damage. …show more content…
Due to its high potency, MT-1 has sunless skin tanning effects and numerous studies have been performed in efforts to determine potential therapeutic properties in the protection against the damaging effects of UV radiation from sunlight as a result of its melanogenesis stimulating effects.
Melanotan I is also known as Afamelanotide, Melanotan, Melanotan -1, NDP-MSH, or CUV1647 and its molecular formula is C78H111N21O19. Its systemic name is Ac-Ser-Tyr-Ser-Nle-Glu-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly-Lys-Pro-Val-NH2. MT-I is a non-selective agonist of MC1R AND MC3-5R which are melanocortin receptors. MT-1 is more of a natural amino acid where else MT-2 is a super potent analogue.
