Chemical Formula Lab

Decent Essays
In this lab we learned about the writing and naming of chemical formulas. Chemical formulas are the expressions that indicate the number and type of atoms present in the smallest representative unit of a substance. Chemical formulas are written by determining the charges of both the cation and anion, then combining them in a way that produces a neutral compound. When naming chemical formulas we had to first write the name of the chemical then the second, adding -ide to the end of the second chemical, unless it was already a polyatomic ion. The polyatomic ion is placed into parenthesis to show that it is one unit. In this lab we also had to observe the precipitates of chemical solutions, such as silver mixed with chlorine. Several chemicals

Materials. Numerous substances in the experiment were used. The most frequently used was the unknown due to the need to test its physical and chemical qualities. When a solution of the unknown was made, 1.000 g of the unknown and 1.0 mL of water was used to make it. To test for the possible ions, 1.0 mL of silver nitrate and 1.0 mL of nitric acid were used for the ion test.…

In this lab, the percent composition of each component in the mixture was calculated. The mixture contained NaCO, CaCO3, and sand. NaCO or salt had a physical change when it completely dissolved in water. A chemical change occurred when hydrochloric acid was added to CaCO3 or chalk because the mixture changed to a yellow green color. In order to obtain the percent composition, a filtration system was used to separate the sand from the liquid, by straining the solid with the use of filter paper.…

At Pyro’s Academy, we have a lot to offer and to teach you! For example, you learn about the different types of chemical reactions such as combustion and displacement, how to write word equations about chemical reactions and the difference between exothermic reactions and endothermic reactions. To write combustion as a word equation you would write ‘___ -> Oxygen = ___ Oxide’ so if the element you were burning was Iron, the product would be Iron Oxide. In a chemical reaction, the surroundings may increase or decrease in temperature due to exothermic and endothermic reactions. An exothermic reaction is where heat exits the reactant, causing it to cool down, and an endothermic reaction is where heat enters the reaction, causing it to heat up.…

This paper describes the process by which a three-component mixture was separated and identified. The mixture was separated with the aid of a separatory funnel and various solvents acids and bases. The compound was found to be comprised of meta-nitroaniline, naphthalene, and benzoic acid / 2-napthol. All three of them are organic compounds with melting points in the order they were listed 111-114, 79-82 and 121-122/121-123 °C. the percent yield of each component was also calculated at the end based on the initial assumption that the mixture was evenly comprised of all three components.…

Since there are more than 50 million chemical compounds on Earth and even more being discovered or synthesized each year, it is increasingly difficult to identify compounds.1 However, with the help of physical and chemical properties of the atoms or molecules that make up a compound, identifying a chemical compound is not as daunting as it may seem. There are three main types of chemical compounds: metallic, covalent, and ionic compounds.2 In this experiment, however, the unknown compounds are specifically ionic.…

In this lab, we carried out a variety of reactions using different chemicals and metals. A chemical reaction is when the chemical state of the substance you are testing rearranges its ionic and molecular structure. One of the reactions we experienced was single replacement, this consists of one ion switching places with another ion to form a new compound. Another reaction we saw was double replacement. In this reaction, two compounds ions are switched to form two new compounds.…

Stoichiometry is typically used during reactions or formations to find quantities of the same unit. Chemical reactions are processes that rearrange the molecular structure of an element. A single-replacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which an element reacts with a compound and replaces a different element in another compound. Aluminum is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. It makes up about 7% of the Earth's crust.…

For comparison and analyze the amino acids that was done in the lab was a successful process. We had great result coming out from each picture. Picture 1 shown the TLC standards of each amino acids, we observed and found that Lysine had the shortest amount of travel distance. Which being say that it is a MOST polar molecules that have to interact with the silica that contains other molecules along the way so it travel slower than the rest amino acids. Table 1 shown the calculation for Rf value of each amino acids and it emphasized that lysine travel distance is only 0.12, which have proved to Picture 1 that it is has the shortest amount of travel.…

Standard solution is the solution that is been made by dissolving a precise mass of reactant meaning the starting substance in a chemical reaction, and it is important that the mass is weighed accurately into distinguish volume of water that will be used. This tells us that if the concentration of standard solution is accurate then it can also be used to work the concentration of a different solution that it can also react with. Its concentration is generally given in mol dm-3. Standard solution is made by taking a petri dish and placing it on a balance. Ensure that the balance is set on zero.…

Volatile liquids require a small amount of thermal energy to vaporize due to the fact that many contain nonpolar molecules. This property of volatile liquids was utilized in this experiment to determine the molar masses of unknown volatile liquids by employing the ideal gas law in the course of vaporization and condensation of the liquids. This was done by taking measurements of volume, temperature, mass, and pressure throughout various steps of the experiement. These findings were then applied to the ideal gas law and molar masses were obtained. The experimental data found from the calculations were similar to the theoretical values, showing that this experiment is practical in the laboratory setting.…

A precipitate means that a solid substance was formed or a substance that is not aqueous was formed. The reactions that did not form a precipitate were DNR, which means that they did not react. At station one barium chloride and potassium nitrate did not react but barium chloride and silver nitrate reacted to form barium nitrate and silver chloride. The precipitate at station one was silver chloride.…
