Chemical Engineering While searching for a major and trying to figure out what to do with your life, it is likely that you will come across someone supporting more people in STEM careers. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics covers a very wide range of education and job opportunities. People who apply these disciplines in their careers are on the frontlines of American technological innovation. Chemical engineering is one of these STEM courses. In short, chemical engineers use skills such as chemistry, physics, and engineering to develop different and new processes for manufacturing chemicals on a large scale ("17-2041.00"). However, my initial interest was actually mechanical engineering because I liked to build and design things. This was changed when I took College Chemistry one and two in high school. I had also always had an interest in chemistry and chemical reactions, but as I learned more about the processes involved and about how chemistry actually works I knew that chemical engineering would be the right career path for me. It combines both chemistry and engineering new and innovative processes on a large scale, which for me is the best of both worlds. With the median salary of most chemical engineers being around $97,000, it also makes it an easy choice as it is one of the highest paid engineering disciplines ("17-2041.00"). With my love for chemistry and engineering, a great job market, and good pay, it makes chemical engineering an obvious choice for …show more content…
Your day to day work could also include overseeing the safety of certain processes and managing chemical handling equipment, as well as servicing it (“Chemical”). You would also conduct different types of research, into either chemicals, processes for creating them, or safety procedures for those working near or around chemical reactions. Designing the layout and arrangement of equipment would also be a job for chemical engineers (“17-2041.00.").
