Parabens are another family of chemicals often used as preservatives in cosmetics that mimic estrogen and have been linked to endocrine disruption (Boberg). In an interview with NPR, author and former teacher at Harvard School of Public Health, David Ropeik said "The endocrine disruption issue has evoked some of the most visceral and ugly attacks among scientists of any scientific issue recently" (Hamilton). Dermatologist Dr. Doris Day strongly opposes the possibility of cosmetic ingredients being harmful, she said in an interview with Fox News “the groups that say organic is better and they point to the dangers of the other products, it’s often based on studies that weren 't published or are taking things out of context” (Carlton). Some argue that the concentration of any ingredient in cosmetics is too low to be harmful. Paula Begoun, founder of Paula’s Choice Skincare, claims that the chemicals in cosmetics, “especially in the small amounts used in personal-care products, do not pose a significant health risk”

During Ventura’s interview with O’Connor, she discovered that various daily personal hygiene and beauty products ranging from toothpaste and antiperspirant, to shampoo, lotion, and makeup contain ingredients that are linked to everything from acne and rashes, to brain damage, cancer and nervous system damage. Additionally, Ventura further supports her claim with evidence from O’Connor’s book where she states “scientists are finding that women with high levels of certain chemicals in their blood and urine - BPAs and phthalates are the two big ones - are having babies with genital birth defects in baby boys at much higher rates than people who have low levels of those chemicals” (Ventura, 2012). Ventura explains that there are not many laws regulating what substances companies use in their manufacturing processes, therefore giving the government insufficient power to ensure the safety of personal care products stocked on retail shelves. To combat such inadequacies, Ventura never leaves the house without her list of bad chemicals while shopping for…

Cosmetic improvement is a good thing because it gives more self esteem to kids and other people who need it. The first reason that cosmetic improvement shouldn’t be terminated is because some kids get bullied about how they look and this cosmetic improvement could make that go away. The visual argument that Frederic Moussa presented was centered around the topic of peer pressure. The visual argument was short and concise so the message was easy to understand. The argument had three images presented in a cause and effect, plus a chronological format where each picture led to another one. The first image used a situation where a person was given a red cup, which symbolized an alcoholic beverage. The second image was a picture that said “Peer Pressure, it only takes one” which meant that peer pressure can trigger an event with just one influence.…

The problem is that many of the products are being made through the use of various toxic chemicals that increase the chance of getting breast cancer (Sartor 1). For example, cosmetic products such as cream, lipstick, and nail polish, are actually the “worst offenders in terms of harmful ingredients” (“Rethink Pink”) because they contain chemicals including sulfates, parabens, antiperspirants, and formaldehyde. Many of the chemicals that are used to create skin products have not been tested, and therefore have the potential to negatively affect our health. Being enlightened of such issues has made me consider whether or not purchasing these products is helping to beat breast cancer, or contributing to the rise of individuals with the disease. In one article, it states that “more than 40,000 women in the U.S. still die of the disease every year” (Sartor…

If the petroleum jelly becomes contaminated during the manufacturing process, possible PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and other carcinogenic agents may get into the jelly. PAHs are considered potentially carcinogenic and have links to breast cancer. Any traces of PAHs are supposed to be removed at the end of the refining process. The European Union requires that the full refining history of a product be known and that the manufacturer be able to show that the “substance from which it is produced is not a carcinogen.”…
