Most people have heard of animal testing, but are still dubious on what exactly is involved. A survey from a randomly sampled population at Campbell University, showed that the majority of people answered on a scale of one to five (five being the most), that they were a two on the amount of knowledge they knew about animal testing (Jonas). Animal testing is used to access the safety and capability of a product ranging anywhere from medicine to makeup, to food testing (“What is Animal Testing?”). Research is performed in multiple settings, such as universities, pharmaceutical companies, and science laboratories (“What is Animal Testing?”). Most supporters of animal testing advocate its use because they believe that it provides promising medical information. Another prominent argument given by supporters, is that although animal testing is a cruel process, it is a necessary evil. In other words, it is too great of a risk to test tube something alone and then give it consecutively to human beings (Collier). Animal testing is justified because we need it to ensure the safety of humans. The third major point that is used in favor of testing is that the process of examination is well regulated, with laws ensuring the protection of animals. The United States enforces the Animal Welfare Care Act (AWA), to protect tested animals. The AWA states that any animals subjected to testing must be provided with clean water and food (“Animal Testing”).
