Nanoparticles (NPs) have piqued the interest of scientists because of their distinct physical, chemical and biological properties when compared to bulk material. These differences in characteristics can be attributed to the high surface-to-volume ratio (SA:V) of NPs compared to bulk material. Since NPs have a higher SA:V than bulk material, they are more reactive than their bulk counterparts; therefore, the surface characteristics of NPs can be easily manipulated. (Xuefei et al, 2014)

In an asthmatic, inhaled allergens interact with Th2 cells and IgE bound to the surface of mast cells, which are interspersed among the bronchial epithelial cells. Activated Th2 and mast cells release chemical mediators of type I hypersensitivity reactions, cytokines, and chemotactic factors, and smooth muscle contraction, mucous secretion, and increased vascular permeability and edema ensue. Release of inflammatory mediators from eosinophils aggravate bronchoconstriction and edema, impairs mucociliary function, and damages epithelial cells.
