Chelsea Football Club were not exempted from having trouble throughout the years of its establishment. In the 1980s, Chelsea was embattled by years of on-going suits with the status of its stadium with David Mears, previous owner of the club. Then owner, Ken Bates, fought hard and opposed the plans to relocate Chelsea to another stadium to make way for new developments.
It is not until 1992, during the property market crash, did Ken Bates managed to fend off the planned relocation plans. Bates then created the Chelsea Pitch Owners, a non-profit organisation owned by the fans which in 1997 purchased the freehold of the stadium, the club's naming rights and the pitch to ensure that property developers could never again try to purchase Stamford Bridge.
