Chelsea Football Club were founded on 10 March 1905 at The Rising Sun pub, (now The Butcher's Hook) opposite today's main entrance to the ground on the Fulham Road. Since there was already a team named Fulham in the borough, the name of the adjacent borough, the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea, was settled on after London FC, Kensington FC and Stamford Bridge FC had been rejected. Blue shirts were adopted by Mears, after the racing colours of Lord Chelsea, along with white shorts and dark blue socks. Chelsea's stadium, Stamford Bridge was built and remains the current home venue for match days.

Chelsea Football Club were not exempted from having trouble throughout the years of its establishment. In the 1980s, Chelsea was embattled by years of on-going suits with the status of its stadium with David Mears, previous owner of the club. Then owner, Ken Bates, fought hard and opposed the plans to relocate Chelsea to another stadium to make way for new developments.
It is not until 1992, during the property market crash, did Ken Bates managed to fend off the planned relocation plans. Bates then created the Chelsea Pitch Owners, a non-profit organisation owned by the fans which in 1997 purchased the freehold of the stadium, the club's naming rights and the pitch to ensure that property developers could never again try to purchase Stamford Bridge. Following this, work was begun to renovate the entire stadium (bar the East Stand), making it all-seater and bringing the stands closer to the pitch and under cover, which was finally completed by the …show more content…

The move forced Chelsea to restructure its financial plan, running at £100 million in debt, as at 2009. During that time frame, wealthy billionaires from all over the world were purchasing football clubs in England to emulate Chelsea's success. As a result, Chelsea's dominance were soon challenged as newly owned clubs were operating from a clean slate whereas Chelsea had to cut its budget
