Chelmno was a concentration camp which was also called Kulmhof. The camp was 47 miles wWest of a town called Lodzs. The camp was specifically made to send Jews to be killed, it was also the first mass extermination camp in Poland to use the gas chambers method. A total of 320,000 people were put to death in the camp. To administer and operate the camp, a special unit was set up, called special commando (Sonderkommando) Kulmhof. It was also known as Special Commando Lange and, later, Special Commando Bothmann . The unit was named after its first commandant Herbert Lange since March 1942.
