Chekhov: The Major Plays
“Chekhov: The Major Plays” is a novel written by Anton Chekhov about four plays that he wrote himself. The plays this novel is about are “The Sea Gull”, “Uncle Vanya”, “The Three Sisters”, and “The Cherry Orchard”.
Born in Taganrog, Russia in the 1860’s, Anton Chekhov was a Russian literary figure. He also was known as one of the best playwrights in this time period. He wrote comedies and tragedies in his works, he also was winner of the Pushkin Prize for his plays. Chekhov began writing to help support his family when his father’s business failed. At this time he was writing for magazines and newspapers. He started writing what he is best known for in 1896.
The author’s purpose of writing this was to give information about his most famous, and most valuable pieces of work. His purpose was received well to his audience by giving detail about what these four plays were about, what made him think to write them, what the moral of these plays were, and his purpose for writing them. These writings are effective because once he wrote these plays it changed theater. A strength this book has is going into so much detail about everything. It is about conflict between four characters due to romance. These characters are to be writer Boris Trigorin, ingénue Nina, Late actress Irina Arkadina, and her son the playwright Konstantin Treplev. He made this cast to be a cast full of diversity. He wrote it to where the cast would speak around issues instead of directly saying them. All the characters pursued art which made them more confident when it comes to their work.
