Although most agree that sideline cheer could and should not be named a sport, competitive cheerleading most definitely is. Since the beginning of time, groups of people have come together to cheer on their favorite sports team. However, “…it wasn’t until the late 1800s that organize cheering came to be,” (History of Cheerleading). At first, cheerleading was a male-dominate sport.…

In high school, you see the soccer players, the football players, the track team and many other sports teams on the football field. On the court you see volleyball players and basketball players playing as "sports teams", but you never hear of the other team in their bows and skirts being referred to as a sports team. That's because cheerleading hasn't made its way to be a sport yet. While people might think that they don't compete or that they just yell and smile, they do much more like competing, supporting, jumping, tumbling, stunting and so many other things. Cheerleaders deserve the right to have their activity made a sport because they meet the criteria of the definition of sport, they're very similar to other athletes, and they're required to meet the same expectations as every other sports team.…

Cheerleading has always been a very important aspect to my life. In high school our cheerleading squad had an experience that proved cheerleaders do not get the respect from other athletes that they deserve. As a cheerleading squad, we were at every football and basketball game, even the away games. We were there to show support for our fellow athletes, however when our squad was in a cheerleading competition, not one of the other athletes came in support of us. This showed the lack of respect other athletes had for our cheerleading squad.…

My Junior year of high school, two best friends on my cheerleading team had a falling out and the events between them greatly affected their ability to work together. We were all members of the same stunt group along with another girl who was unaware of the problem. In practice, none of our stunts were working very well because both girls were putting less energy into the lifting me so the other would have to put more into it. I was not aware that they had a falling out, but after being dropped on the floor multiple times, I took them aside to talk to them. They refused to talk to me together, so I talked to them one on one.…
