“U.G.L.Y you ain’t got no alibi!” You’ve heard it, I’ve heard it, we’ve all hear this horrifying cheer, that cheerleaders use all around the country. Cheerleading is a very dramatic activity. When you first hear the word drama, what do you think of? You might be thinking, chaos, exclusion, crying, fights, judgement, etc. All of these words lead back to one thing. Cheerleading.
Most girls, teenagers especially are full of drama. So cheerleading could easily turn to bullying, by saying hurtful cheers, judging girl’s or boys based on their skill, excluding people by forming cliques, making some cheerleaders feel self conscious, and especially since to be a flier, the cheerleader is lifted and does stunts in the air. In “True Tale of a Young Cheerleader”, Brandi S. discussed the routines that her team was required to learn, and described one as “such an extreme and dangerous stunt that [she] had gotten [her] shoulder pulled out of its socket.” She goes on to talk about the excruciating pain she endured after a fall during this particular stunt, but never once did she say that cheerleading was a mistake or too dangerous.
