During the first cheerleading practice of my sophomore year, I had fallen from a stunt, dislocated my elbow and tore ligaments. I went to physical therapy for a few weeks and was eventually released for cheerleading camp. I was allowed to fly and do the motions. I wasn't allowed to tumble or lift stunts known as basing. Cheerleading camp consisted of three days, the first day and second day was for practicing and the third day was a showcase for our parents. Varsity suggests this is how cheerleading started. Women weren’t permitted to cheer until 1923. In 1948, Lawrence Herkimer held the first cheerleading clinic and he created the ¨herkie jump¨ that modern cheerleaders today are still familiar with. Cheerleading was happening in almost every high school and elementary school in the 1960’s. Jeff Webb founded the Universal Cheerleading Association, also known as, UCA. UCA taught more elaborate skills, essentially pyramids and partner stunting (¨Being¨). International Cheer Union states that In 1990, cheerleading sparked interest in many athletes forming all-star teams (¨History¨). Varsity admits that all-star teams were non-school based and focused more on the competition of cheerleading, like tumbling and stunting. Varsity points out that around 1995, International Cheerleading started becoming prominent along with the continuously growing interest in all-star cheerleading (¨Being¨). International Cheer Union claims that in 2004, the first Cheerleading Worlds are hosted by IASF (International All-Star Federation) at Walt Disney (¨History¨). High School cheerleading and College cheerleading have similarities and differences. Some high school teams participate in competitions and stunting. The majority of high schools do not because of the insurance expense. Furthermore, the majority of
