Millions of cameras of cameras casted everywhere, thousands of people and scouts in the stands, and athletes all going for pride and a trophy for bragging rights. I’m not talking about sports like football or basketball, but I’m talking about the fastest growing female sport, cheerleading. Cheerleaders are the pride and soul of school spirit, and sometimes what edges some programs along to be great. Cheerleading is practiced worldwide with multiple styles and types being participated in. Some however do not consider it a real sport, like soccer or hockey, because it lacks much physicality and it is somewhat a beauty contest. For them to even make almost any team, cheerleaders must participate in an extensive tryout process often taking more than a week. Even performing the various moves doesn’t assure them a spot. Making the high school team is a great feat. At this level they compete for a state championships and also have traveling teams like other sports have. Some cheerleaders are recruited out of high school for their specific talents and skill that they possess. Scholarships are offered to the cheerleaders coming out of high school, just like athletes in other major sports. Some may go on to become professionals, cheering at professional football games, or maybe even becoming an Olympic gymnast. Before you determine whether you think cheerleading is an actual sport or not, look for a local cheerleading competition or look out for the next public broadcast of the high school and college cheerleading national championships.
