Cheerleaders: A Narrative Fiction

“You have a crush on her.” Maya teased, watching as her best friend kept staring at the cheerleader from across the study hall they shared with her.
“What? No. Of course not..” Riley stuttered out, “Why do you think she has a crush on me?” Riley hoped she was the only one that detected the desperation in her voice.
Maya shrugged before scribbling down something on her notebook paper. She waited for Fledge to turn his back before throwing paper ball onto the cheerleaders table.
“Maya, no!” Riley whispered harshly, it was too late, the paper had successfully landed in front of Jenkins face.
Both girls looked on in curiosity as the black girl opened the paper, she didn’t look angry Riley noted but she did look at Riley for a long time before tucking her paper into her backpack and continued to study.

Riley was a mess, she was supposed to be studying for her Psych exam but all she could do was think about what Maya wrote in the note. With much prodding her best friend would not tell her instead she would smirk knowingly.
The last bell of the day rang and with it Riley’s heart sank. She didn’t leave her seat until Maya practically shoved her into Jenkins. The slender girl caught Riley effortlessly.
“Thanks.” Riley mumbled, pulling herself together. “I’m sorry about the note.” Riley rushed out, “Maya wrote it and I couldn’t stop her from sending it.”
What Riley Matthews didn’t expect was the disappointing face she was met with. The older girl wouldn’t look at her and it made something inside Riley clench.
“It’s fine. I figured you didn’t want to go on a date
