Cheerios Heart Healthy Campaign

In 2014, General Mills released a commercial on television as well as a video on youtube about their cereal Cheerios, that featured a biracial family with a mom, dad and their young daughter. This ad was showing the common message that this campaign has created which is when you eat Cheerios, you are reducing your risk of heart disease. This ad not only highlighted the topic of heart health but also the social topic of the rise and acceptance of biracial families and individuals such as the daughter in the ad.The Cheerios Heart Healthy campaign used a two headed front in order to bolster their credibility by appearing wholesome in terms of health and social awareness. From a social perspective, this ad was affective because of the fact that it is considered credible, from “2000-2010 being biracial or multiracial had increased over 28% according to the 2010 census and biracial families have grown over 9 million in the past decade”. Dietary trends fluctuate and change with dizzying frequency. “ Low-carbohydrate foods are the hot trend in the food industry. Manufacturers, restaurants, and grocery stores have raced to keep pace with consumer demand, offering everything from beer and ice cream to breads and chocolates (Zelman 1)”. In order to combat this, Cheerios redirects the consumer’s focus to the heart health found in consuming whole grains. They have also been up to the current trend of gluten-free ensuring that all people, even ones with diet restrictions, can still enjoy their product. A campaign to promote the fact that their product is also gluten-free is a stopgap measure to fight yet another objection to their brand and gain another potential
