Our sponsor was the Kindergarten teacher who had a strong passion for working hard. Her name was Melissa Ritter, and she changed the cheerleading program for the better. That year we accomplished more than we had ever dreamed; five dances, full-down stunts, flips and tumbling. We were excellent at what we did, and for the first time I felt like I had really accomplished my dream. I was really a cheerleader thanks to her guidance and encouragement.
As a senior I am about to assume the role of cheer captain. I will be returning to the squad with the same friends I had made throughout all of the tryouts I had suffered through. I have tried so hard to achieve this goal and now I intend to maintain it.
When I put on my glittery makeup, pick up my shimmering pompoms and flash my pretty smile for one last go-around, I’ll keep in mind that there is a little girl in the stands looking at me in awe, and I can’t let her down. Whenever it is time to hang up my cheer shoes and put my bow away, I want to know that I have touched someone’s life the way those young women in red touched mine so long ago, because Cheerleading is more than just glitter and shimmer.
