This is my third year as a high school cheerleader. I am currently serving as the senior high cheer captain. Through the past three years of my high school career, cheer has continually impacted my life positively in more than one aspect. It has opened numerous doors for me. It has made me not only more physically active, but also more active in my school. Cheerleading has been the one activity that keeps me physically active. During football season, I have practice four times a week and a game on Friday. Before practice, I warm-up and stretch. After practice, I run the block. During basketball season I have two games a week and up to three practices. These practices include the same routine as the football season’s practices. Also, since

Cheerleaders are despicable. They are utterly malevolent. At least that is how they are commonly portrayed in the media. The cheerleading trope is an exceptionally popular occurrence that is seen time and time again throughout pop culture and popular media in the form of films, television shows, books, music, and even video games. The cheerleader trope is frequently portrayed by a single girl or a group of girls who are a part of a cheerleading squad.…

Throughout the summer I decided that I wanted to spend most of my time volunteering at youth cheerleading camps. Not only did I get the chance to interact with younger girls and set a good role model, but I also got the chance to work with other girls my age who have talent and loves cheerleading just as much as I do! The two camps I was a part of was the Danny Lansanah Football/Cheerleading Camp and the Packers & Broncos Cheerleading Camp. Both camps were located at John Harris High School for ages 5-14 and were free with food provided. During both camps my job was to focus on the basic skills you need to learn to become a cheerleader and also make up a routine to teach the girls.…

I chose to participate in Varsity soccer, because I have a passion for soccer. I also wanted to stay healthy, be part of a team, be a leader, and have fun! Through playing soccer in High School, I was taught how to be a team player, which is an essential skill for life. Being a team player is beneficial for the entire team! For example, if I have a decent chance to score a goal, but my teammate has an even better chance to score, I would pass the ball to him instead of scoring myself!…

As I approached my senior year I anticipated becoming a team captain of the cross country girls team, one who pushes the girls, cheers them on during practices and races, and comforts them in their hard times. The team captains I had my other three years inspired me to be better by encouraging me to run faster, giving me quotes before meets, cheering me on at races, and becoming some of my best friends. I looked up to them as a shining example and knew I wanted to carry on the team captain tradition as a dedicated, inspirational, and caring team captain. The opportunity for me to be a team captain came last summer when my cross country coach, Coach Corry, asked me to be a captain as a leader, runner, and example of daily dedication. I enjoyed planning activities for the cross country girls…

My mother always told me, "Always be leader, never a follower", that is what I did. Growing up in school, teachers encouraged group work and I always took charge. Cheerleaders lead the crowd, lead the team, and overall, we lead the culture of spirit.…

People always have many different opinions about cheerleaders; some good and some bad. Some think of them as the girls in skirts that just stand on the sidelines on Friday nights, but to me, cheerleading is so much more. Cheerleading is a way to show your support for the team being cheered on and spirit for your school, all while setting an outstanding example for everyone else within the community. I believe our squad holds enough potential to be one of the best squads to ever filter through Robertsdale High School; I would love nothing more than to be able to help guide this group of girls in the right direction and push our squad to be the best we can be. After cheering for the past 4 years—two of which I have been on Varsity, including a year of competitive cheer—I have learned multiple lessons and have thought long and hard about how I would work to change or improve certain things if I was captain.…
