Children are curious by nature; the urge to explore the unknown is in their blood. Generations ago, the unknown might have involved the outdoors or the wilderness. Today, the “unknown” that children know of and wonder about is on the internet. Inquisitiveness can be a good thing, but when the curiosity of kids, and especially teens, is paired with the wide array of possibilities on the internet, a potentially dangerous situation may be created. In the article “The Undercover Parent,” Harlan Coben writes about the hazards of the internet world, and what parents can do to protect their kids from them.…

If you are reading this article and you are the parent of a teenager, you probably went to high school from the late 70's through the early 90's. Even for those of you who finished school in the 90's, communication was a major problem in those days. The internet didn't even start getting popular until the mid to late 90's, and cellphones didn't become popular until the late 90's or maybe even 2000. To say that being discreet was hard to do in those days would be a major understatement. If someone wanted to get ahold of you, they had to call the "home phone"... and if mom and dad were on to something, they had to go through them.…

However, by focusing on the way the “supposedly” positive effects that these children and teens experience by using these social media sites, the authors overlooks the deeper problem of these social networks. The point is that by meeting new people online and having a relationship with them, without actually knowing who they are, is like inviting predators to harm you, or invade your privacy, cyber-bullying, as well as identity theft to your person. Therefore, as parent it is important to moderate what your child is doing on the internet, as well as putting ground rules on the uses of social media…
