The Cave of Forgotten Dreams is one of the oldest caves of all time. In fact, it is determined that the cave existed for about 30,000-33,000 years (Herzog, 2010). In 1994, a small group of French scientist lead by Jean-Marie Chauvet discovered the cave, and when the French government realized how precious it was, they shut off the access to it (Herzog, 2010). However, Werner Herzog a documentary filmmaker got permission to access the cave. He believed that the Chauvet Cave contains most of the oldest human art ever discovered, so he gathered a group of researchers and they started their journey trying to understand what happened there in over 32,000 years ago.
When researchers arrived to the Chauvet Cave, they realized that it is narrow and can hardly fit one person at a time and by studying the cave’s dimensions they found that it is about 1300 feet long (Herzog, 2010). The researchers discovered in their journey a very large number of paintings, including different kinds of animals and figures. One of their marvelous discoveries is

Researchers revealed that the shading was made using the “stamp drawing” technique (Herzog, 2010). Further in the cave, they found a bison figure which was drawn using black paint on a wall that has a great deal of bear’s scratch marks. Researchers believed that those scratch marks were made before the period of the cave artworks. In addition to the bison design there are additional painting were discovered later in the cave like the horse, owl, black lions and rhinos with different techniques used in each one. Not only paintings and drawings were found in the cave, as researchers have also spotted the formation of crystals. Such crystals take thousands of years to grow, even the artist of the cave did not see them (Herzog,

Radiocarbon dating of the charcoal in the black pigments demonstrated that the earlier paintings in the cave were made 35,000 years prior. The date toppled the possibility that Europe's earliest art paintings were simple and straightforward. More than 80 radiocarbon dates have been taken from the torch marks and paintings on the walls, as well as the animal bones and charcoal that litter the floor, providing a detailed chronology of the cave. The dates…

Jessica Martinkosky V100 Weyers Cave, VA 24486 Dear Ms. Martinkosky, I am writing to introduce you to the work of Marilyn Levine. She is a ceramics artist that specializes in making clay appear as leather. Unfortunately she is deceased however; she has dedicated her career to making hyper realistic renderings of leather objects that are entirely made from clay. Although many artists refine, vary or shift styles throughout their careers, Levine stuck to the realistic sculpture she devised 35 years ago as a graduate student at UC Berkeley. A viewer of one of her shows described her as the following "In a lesser artist, this apparent lack of development would be interpreted as a severe limitation.…

    Shamanism In Cave Art

Shamanism is a front running hypothesis and is associated with magico-religious expression through the form of cave art. However, it’s a highly contentious subject with some people fiercely opposing this theory and branding its advocates as ‘shamaniacs’. Perhaps the contention lies with “the loose use of labels and names such as shamanism that has led to some of the confusion” (Taçon, 2006). Often shamanism has been used to rationalize almost everything in a way that suggests it was “shamans and their initiates that were the main or even exclusive producers of rock art” (Taçon, 2006). Even though shamanism has been a long standing theory for cave art interpretations, it has only been taken seriously in the scientific field within the last two decades, and is based on ethnographic data linked to San rock art in Southern Africa.…

The only element that is in their vision is the “shadow on the back wall where the prisoners see the moving shadow projected as if on a screen” (Stickney 11). Their entire life has been spent looking at the wall. They have never seen the real person or anything that actually exists except the shadows. Additionally, since the prisoners were unable to move their head they were not able to identify the key details from the shadow.…

Diana Yelenets Randee Goodstadt HIS-111-YD1 16 January 2016 The article I chose to discuss is “Ancient Women Artists May Be Responsible for Most Cave Art” by Rachel Nuwer. I was drawn to this article because I have never heard about such a possibility before and this was a new concept for me. The article started talking about how most scientists have always assumed that the artists who drew cave paintings were males because they often depicted animals and hunting. It is known that during the paleolithic and neolithic era, men were usually hunted while women were the gatherers.…
