Hypocrisy is when someone teaches or preaches for the people to do one thing and then he turns around and does the exact opposite from what he taught. Chaucer directly attacks the church because he believe that the roots are the most corrupt parts of the church. He writes a story about a Pardoner who is supposed to be a good image for the church but is instead completely opposite from what he should be. When he is introduced in The General Prologue as well as in The Pardoners Prologue and Tale, Chaucer swirls some satire into his few lines of this character. “Then priest like in my pulpit, with a frown, I stand, and when the yokels have sat down, I preach, as you have heard me say before, and tell a hundred lying mockeries more.”…
The corruption of the human community The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1952. The Crucible shows the events that occur in the town of Salem which is inspired by the McCarthy hearings in the 1950’s. It displays how easily human communities can be corrupted by certain desires of individuals. Throughout the story this concept is shown supported by many themes that display the different factors that account for the events that occur.…
This shows how Chaucer is not supportive of women and instead shares them as negative women and that they were devious enough to cheat on their husbands in their own…
Throughout history there have been many great citizens, from Jesus to Martin Luther King, who have been willing to risk their own lives in the pursuit of liberty for all. These are the people who do not ignorantly submit to an unjust rule and instead follow their own conscience. Giles Corey in The Crucible observed the corruption in Salem society and would play no part in it, which resulted in his death at the hands of the oppressors. When people resist unjust rules, it brings others to the same realization to fight for their moral conscience, and in this resistance it truly can inspire and improve society. Not only is it appropriate to detect unjust rules, but people have an obligation to resist these unjust rules in the interest of the greater…

Chaucer is juxtaposing the status of a priest, which is considered as a holy man devoted to upholding the word of God, compared to gold, a metal incapable of rusting. He is asking of his audience as part of humanity, what should the average man do if a priest, so highly regarded, partakes in disgraceful acts. He states that if a leader becomes rotten so then will their followers. Although,…
During both “The Knight’s Tale” and the “The Canterbury Tales” give a great representation of the peasant social class. The peasant class is also the working class, this class is the lowest class in the medieval era. The working class was responsible for the majority of the revenue and supplies that the society relied on in this time. The working class was the most religious group in the society because they did not have many belongings and prayed for good fortune.…
War is not a thing to be celebrated and this clear-cut summation is frequently most poignantly expressed by those that experience it firsthand. Chaucer’s knight is such a character and as such, his insertion into the tale creates a unique perspective to any serious reading of the Temple of Mars. The notion that war and crime are one in the same similarly alters the reader’s perceptions of Arcite. Arcite’s willing entreaty to the divine incarnation of bloodshed and slaughter, paints a picture of a knight that has forgotten the true nature of nobility and honor. Arcite’s selfish desire for victory and adulation are augmented by the images that surround him during his prayer to the embodiment of human cruelty.…

In his literary masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer shows that in “The Clerk’s Tale” a man may abuse his power in a marriage when trying to assert dominance over his wife. A man named Walter puts his wife through many difficult challenges to test her loyalty for him. He lies to her by telling her that his people are unhappy with how poor she is and to solve the problem by killing their children. Instead of killing her children, Walter sent both his daughter and son to Bologna to be foster. Despite getting her kids taken away from her, she seems to have no regret doing anything that her husband asks her to do.…

The first is that he shows the increasing middle class population. Many of the characters within Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales fit into at least one of the many molds and careers that would make them part of the middle class. The Reeve would be considered a part of the middle class because his job holds a higher, more honorable status than a simple peasant. As the leader of a village, the Reeve was respected by many peasants.…
Throughout history stories have been one if the fundamental basis of all cultures no matter if they have been passed down orally from generation to generation or through written in script. There are several stories and poems in The Norton Anthology of English Literature that are considered to be some of the best literature of all time, such as Beowulf, Everyman, and The Canterbury Tales. Within these literature works people can see several differences and similarities as the literature moves through time. Personally, I believe that Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales have the most apparent similarities to the contemporary values of the modern world.…
This shows the difference between The Knight and The Miller 's Tale. In the Miller 's Tale John and Nicholas both have very rude and immature language in the way they speak to people. It is shown Chaucer prefers the more noble, classy man over what the Miller’s tale portrays which is why it’s very fitting that the narrator introduced him as the first character since he depicts what a true noble man should be during the medieval times. The Knight’s tale illustrates a perfect example of a hierarchical and patriarchal society, which also shows the how many people can change their lives and fate by their…
